explores the constant tension between the recognition that identities are a jigsaw puzzle of overlapping, clashing, connecting, and retreating parts, and our conviction that we know others or, at the very least\u2014ourselves. It features self-portraits, portraits of others, as well as portraits in which one identity appropriates another, third entity, as opposed to the I-other dichotomy. A set of common sensibilities links their works to <strong>Aram Gershuni<\/strong>&#8216;s painted self-portraits.<br \/>\nThe exhibition conveys a strong sense of the present, in which we are painfully aware of the fluid quality of images and the structuring of portraits. At the same time, interwar Europe is likewise present, the Europe in which the millions of wounded people from World War I served as a constant reminder of disfiguration.<sup>2<\/sup> Heiman&#8217;s, Lapid&#8217;s, and Shaham&#8217;s works contain recurring references to these periods.<br \/>\nHeiman presents Vitrine: Szondi Test, Experimental Diagnostic of Affinities (Zurich, 1947) (2010), a psychological test box containing portraits catalogued as &#8220;types&#8221; in the spirit of pseudo-scientific doctrines, primarily physiognomy and eugenics. Shaham presents a series of works (2011\u201314) based on portraits according to profession from August Sander&#8217;s ambitious project, <em>People of the Twentieth Century<\/em><em> (ca. 1911\u201346)<\/em>. Sander&#8217;s magnum opus is the best known compilation of photographic portraits, but many similar publications came out at the same time (e.g. Everyday Heads. Unknown People. (1931) by photographer Helmar Lerski, who was active in Palestine during the 1930s and 1940s, and is largely responsible for modeling the image of the Hebrew pioneer). Shaham deconstructs and reconstructs Sander&#8217;s portraits, disrupting their classified nature to create multi-layered, enigmatic figures.<br \/>\nThe deconstruction of identity into multiple, often contradictory, elements is shared by the various works on view. In Lapid&#8217;s The New Zero (2007) and Partial Moments (2011\u201314) and in Heiman&#8217;s Piero della Francesca \/ <em>The Montefeltro Altapiece<\/em>, 1465\u20131474 (2008) and See? Me and Aviva Uri (1993\u20132005), the portraits are flawed, cropped, or erased. They call to mind the iconoclastic practice of erasing faces from art works, a concept which began as a phenomenon of religious violence, and is now synonyms with objection to and fear of visual imagery. The partial concealment of women&#8217;s faces in various fundamental religious sects is also invoked in this context.<br \/>\nIn Heiman&#8217;s <em>Self-Portrait, 28 December 1987 (Dedicated to Ofra Eshel)<\/em> (1987), where her hands cover her eyes, and in the video <em>Attacks on Linking No. 3: Proof Only, A Link (2001\u201306),<\/em> the portrait is a flexible entity: the city of Tel Aviv is seen through Aviva Uri&#8217;s face, whose eyes are cut out, thus dissolving the solidity of any portrait.<br \/>\nLapid&#8217;s video piece The <em>New Zero<\/em> (2007) consists of photographs which the artist found in envelopes on a Jerusalem street in 1999, while a student at the Bezalel Academy of Arts an Design, photos which were probably left behind from a photography studio that closed. Lapid edited the portraits such that they are screened in a sequence, with the upper part of the subjects&#8217; faces invisible to viewers. The &#8220;album&#8221; does not deprive the images of their documentary value; it forces the viewer to decipher identity according to body language and attire. The absence of a full portrait elicits alienation and curiosity, like a meeting of strangers.<br \/>\nIn Gershuni&#8217;s paintings, both from 2009, the image is whole, but far from na\u00efve. A self-portrait seen from the back and a self-portrait with eyes shut are images of avoidance, withdrawal, and detachment. The virtuosity of the painting is like an undamaged shell that protects a vulnerable entity.<br \/>\nThe exhibition is a conceptual sphere, and at the same time\u2014a physical space, drawing the fine line between the dissolution of the portrait, its becoming abstract and partial, and the desperate attempt to hold onto the essence, onto an inner nucleus of presence. One cannot avoid thinking of the engagement with the partial portrait and the structuring of the portrait in the context of the rapid transformation that has occurred in the Israeli politics of identity, which has accelerated in the past decade. If you will, the exhibition distances itself, but nonetheless suggests a perspective on an ongoing process.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0Notes<br \/>\nTwo interesting novels to examine in relation to the visual representation of the portrait are Oscar Wilde&#8217;s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890), which addresses the portrait directly, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce&#8217;s first modern avant-garde novel (1916), which sketches the figure of an artist.<br \/>\nThe German Expressionists, specifically Otto Dix and George Grosz, engaged in this extensively.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The works by <strong>Assaf Shaham <\/strong>are based on August Sander\u2019s ambitious photographic project <em>People of the Twentieth Century<\/em>, made over the first half of the previous century. Sander documented people from all walks of life in Germany, classifying them by professional and social status. Shaham\u2019s works in the current exhibition are composites, made up of a series of portraits of artists, divided into subcategories of authors, actors, architects, sculptors, painters, and music composers and performers.<br \/>\nIn her book <em>On Photography, <\/em>Susan Sontag described Sander as having photographed individuals as if they were wearing a social mask. Shaham makes no attempt to conceal the violence of dissecting Sanders\u2019 skillfully constructed images. In some of the works, Shaham depicts the back of the photographic paper, with ghost shadows in white, figures drained of their traits to remain as empty signs (perhaps alluding to Robert Musil\u2019s book <em>The Man Without Qualities, <\/em>on the decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). The act of cutting of the portraits, an action we may view as iconoclasm, becomes in Shaham\u2019s hands an act of construction of the elusive, distant, and changing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Assaf Shaham<\/strong> (b. 1983, Israel) lives and works in Tel Aviv and Los Angeles. He is a graduate of the Minshar for Art College, Tel Aviv (2011) and the independent study program at Maumas, Lisbon. Both pictures taken together raise questions about the act of painting. Through the rear view, Gershuni emphasizes to what extent our gaze at ourselves is forever indirect, eternally reflected through others. We can view our face and back only through a mediator, such as a mirror. In a self-portrait, the mirror becomes \u201cthe other,\u201d an additional presence in a supposed intimacy with the self, as in the reference to the Narcissus myth. Narcissus, son of the river god and a nymph, died after he became entranced with his own reflection. The artist\u2019s shut eyes therefore signify death and blindness \u2013 two of the direst threats to the visual artist. Perhaps because of this great danger, Art became enchanted by these two themes and addresses it repeatedly in different ways.<br \/>\nThe missing hands in one portrait and the shut eyes in the other intensify the sensation of silence, perhaps a deadly silence. The face and the torso fill almost the entire frame but despite the humanity of the portrait, neither can (metaphorically) gaze back at the viewer. The work merges calm and apathetic cold, presence and absence, introversion to the point of erasure of one\u2019s self-image. In the view from behind, the disappearance and the not-knowing is cruder but no less beautiful, with the slightly hunched shoulders and the encounter between the depiction of the skin \u2013 the flesh \u2013 and the imperfect white wall.\u00a0 Both are naked, their weakness bared.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Aram Gershuni <\/strong>(b. 1967, Israel), lives and works in Tel Aviv. A self-taught artist, he attended the Jerusalem Studio School in 1997-98.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Yaron Lapid<\/strong> observes and examines portraits as junctions of paradigms of various stereotypes, between narcissism and the long shadow of Death. Most of his works are based on found photographic material in Israel and England. In the photographs he found in England, he erases the portraits with a thick black strip, thus creating an impenetrable barrier between viewers and subjects. The black strip over the heads emphasizes conformity and the mechanical fashion. Pieces such as <em>Cricket, 2015, <\/em>arouse a feeling of totalitarian repression, camouflaged by the green background.<br \/>\n<em>The Double <\/em>is also based on a photograph found in England, bringing to mind the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century obsession with \u201cspirit photography,\u201d and especially the engagement with the double as the symbol of a split personality in the 1920s and \u201830s. The double, or the shadow, which takes on a life of its own and can harm the original, was a frequent literary and cinematic symbol (e.g., Oscar Wilde\u2019s <em>Picture of Dorian Grey<\/em>; silent film<em> Cabinet of Dr. Caligari).<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Yaron Lapid<\/strong> (b. 1974, Israel) lives and works in London. He holds a BFA in Photography from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem; and an MFA from Goldsmiths\u2019 College, London, where he has been a Research Fellow. His artworks are exhibited in galleries and film festivals worldwide. At the Jewish Film Festival London 2015, a tribute evening was devoted to his oeuvre.<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Fragmented portraits are a repeated motif in <strong>Michal Heiman<\/strong>\u2019s rich body of work in multiple mediums. She conceals parts of the face and body through extreme gestures which she emphasizes, using a black strip like a censor\u2019s mark, cutting, erasing, or covering. The photograph, <em>Self-portrait, 12 December 1987 (Dedicated to Ofra Eshel),<\/em> in which one eye peeks out from behind her hands, is half \u00a0prayerful entreaty and half the focus of a documentary gaze, in complete contrast to the delicacy of her hands. Heiman constructs portraits that bring into being a third entity beyond the built-in dichotomy of \u201cI and Thou.\u201d<br \/>\nIn works such as <em>I was there, No. 3 (Claude Cahun) (2001-05) <\/em>and <em>Diane? <\/em>(<em>Diane Arbus\/ Self-portrait pregnant, 1945<\/em>) (2008) Heiman inserts her self-portrait, half hidden by the camera, into the space of someone else\u2019s portrait. Claude Cahun, a French Jewish avant garde artist, photographed herself facing a mirror, but Heiman\u2019s face is reflected in it. In the self-portrait of the young Diane Arbus, Heiman covers Arbus\u2019s chest in a protective act against Peeping Toms or as censorship. Heiman stands behind Arbus on the photographic plane reflected in the mirror. Both glances become a single entity that is a new portrait. Similarly, Heiman uses a mask of Israeli artist Aviva Uri\u2019s face, through which she observes the world and recounts its stories.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Michal Heiman<\/strong> (b. 1954, Israel). Lives and works in Tel Aviv. Heiman is an established Israeli artist with numerous awards, including the first Shpilman Prize for Excellence in Photography (2010).
