With its high-ceilinged rooms painted bold colors, beautiful flooring and suites, the Bialik House preserves not only the past but the fantasy of what the founders envisioned as the future image of the \u201cfirst Hebrew city.\u201d<br \/>\nThe four participating artists in my project Art Intervention I in the Bialik House, <b>Nir Adoni, Eliahou Eric Bokobza, Tzibi Geva <\/b>and <b>Chaya Rukin,<\/b>\u00a0 share specific sensitivities of continuity and the ephemeral. The past flows into the present, \u00a0an unknown past is being revealed, a past we did not know, or one which was repressed or forgotten.<br \/>\nThe artworks exhibited in the Bialik House respond and echo the ambiguity and yearning manifested in this beautiful edifice, so peaceful on the outside. The new works are exhibited alongside paintings by Reuven Rubin, Shmuel Ovadyahu, Pinchas Litvinovsky and other Eretz Israel artists of the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, which graced the walls when Bialik and his family resided there. These small-scale sculptures encompass longings for Europe and an Orientalist worldview. The representation of Rachel\u2019s Tomb, the focus of the prayers of Diaspora Jewry, evokes Mother Rachel weeping for her children; while on the other hand, a typical sheikh\u2019s tomb perceived through an Orientalist prism represents a time capsule of the ancient Middle East. Over recent decades, currents of Jewish piety have identified in these structures tombs of Jewish holy men and the burial places of biblical figures. The miniature International style building embodies the vision of Modernism imported from Western Europe. The glass-fronted china cabinet, full of formal tableware, the pride of the house, harbors another piece by Rukin from a shard of a plastic splint with a sail made of a piece of glass. The combination of a broken splint meant to heal and a dangerous piece of glass seems as obsessive as a despairing lover cleaving to the source of his pain. Perhaps this is the silhouette in which we can search for answers <b>\u201cTo eternity\u2019s end, beyond the sea.\u201d<\/b>\u00a0 The metal cutout of a cathedral that was never built in Tel Aviv hangs near the form of the Hassan Bek mosque whose construction was completed one year before Bialik settled in Tel Aviv. The works float in the small room, reminiscent of the early Bezalel Art School style, such as works by Meir Gur-Arie, who also sculpted a bust of Bialik, and the decorative tiles from Ze\u2019ev Raban\u2019s studio which decorate the pillars and fireplace in the parlor.<br \/>\n<b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Tzibi Geva<\/b>\u2019s painted birds sit on branches or wires, poised with stability,<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_805\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Tsibi-G-02.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[796]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-805\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-805\" alt=\"Tsibi Geva , Bird\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Tsibi-G-02-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-805\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tsibi Geva , Bird<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">holding on tightly with their thin legs, on small formats of wood from old furniture, paper and canvas. The birds are from Geva\u2019s new series created over the past year, although birds have appeared in his oeuvre since the 1980s. The birds reflect contemplations of local landscape, from the memories of the birds studied in nature and homeland lessons through the mention of wanderings in Bialik\u2019s poems. The works are placed in the study, the haert of Bialik\u2019s creative work as a writer and his identity as an intellectual, as a place of rest for wandering thoughts between Exile and hot Eastern lands. Geva\u2019s paintings, with their drips, patches of color, crudeness and melancholy, are exposed in the study in all their delicacy and vulnerability, birds hiding among the books.<br \/>\nThe contemporary artworks divulge a transparent cloud of longing and hope filling the House, a site which conceals more than it reveals. Art, \u00a0not obligated to formulate itself in literal sentences, becomes part of the passions and the desires between the walls, bringing forward fragility beyond the grandeur.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\"><b>\u201cTo eternity\u2019s end, beyond the sea\u2026\u201d<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Beit Bialik Museum: Art Intervention I<br \/>\n<\/b><b>December 2013 \u2013 March 2014<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Exhibition Curator: Smadar Sheffi, PhD<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Chief Curator and Director of the Bialik Complex: <\/b><b>Ayelet Bitan Shlonsky<\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">In mid-November, I Participated in the founding conference of the Azrieli Institute of Israel Studies at the Concordia University in Montreal, where I gave a lecture titled, \u201c<em>Milk, Blood and Honey: Contemporary Art from Israel<\/em>.\u201d It focused on Israeli art since the new millennium with emphasis on the past few years. This was an opportunity to crystallize my ideas and thoughts about current Israeli art, resulting in a picture of creativity haunted by doubt, constant soul-searching, courage and necessity bringing about a renewed engagement with addressing the past, especially the Holocaust. A look at the current galleries listing in Tel Aviv attests to its place in the culture sphere( \u201cA bit of luck\u201d by Roy Menachem Markovitch at RawArt; Tamar Hirschfeld\u2019s video art \u201cSchwartze skiing in Austria\u201d in \u201cEth(n)ics\u201d at the Givon Gallery, and \u201cJocheved Weinfeld\u2019s Seamline,\u201d at the Gordon Gallery).<br \/>\nWith these thoughts and quite a few impressions from the Conference lectures on the construction of identity running through my head, I went to see the exhibition \u201cBeat Nation: Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture\u201d at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al.<br \/>\nSome Conversations in Montreal gave me a certain insight as to the way in which Canada \u2013 \u00a0at least parts of Canadian academia \u2013 addresses its past of conquest and slaughter of nations native to the country before the Europeans. The attitude is similar to the one in the USA towards Native Americans, groups of nations and tribes\u00a0 referred to in the past as \u201cIndians\u201d (often coupled with the word \u201cwild\u201d), but there are essential differences: in Canada, the indigenous population is called \u201cFirst Nations,\u201d composed mainly of two aboriginal nations (a word usually associated, at least in Israel, with Australia) \u2013 the Inuit and the M\u00e9tis.<br \/>\nOn view in the exhibition are works by artists merging the influences of western urban culture with the culture and heritage of the First Nations to produce works addressing issues of identity which are visually and intellectually breathtaking.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_812\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/BEAR-WITNESS.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[796]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-812\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-812\" alt=\" Bear Witness , Assimilate this!\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/BEAR-WITNESS-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/BEAR-WITNESS-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/BEAR-WITNESS-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/BEAR-WITNESS.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bear Witness , Assimilate this!<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">The excellent video \u201cAssimilate this!\u201d by Bear Witness, a multimedia artist who exhibited in Canada and Berlin, is an extremely impressive work in an overall outstanding exhibition. The artist created a work addressing issues of identity in an intelligent, ironic, entertaining and bitter manner, transformed into a physical experience through the soundtrack. The highly rhythmical music of continuous drumming and aboriginal chanting\u00a0 accompanies visuals of clips from westerns intercut with clips from Tarantino\u2019s <i>Inglorious Basterds<\/i> and Jim Jarmusch\u2019s <i>Dead Man. <\/i>The video art examines the way in which the representation of the First Nations has been constructed through western eyes in North America, moving between admiration and ridicule, between the image of the Noble Savage and heathen whose souls must be saved. The exhibition avoids the violent or painful aspects of defending the First Nations\u2019 culture in contemporary Canada, except for screening some footage of demonstrations against land confiscation.<br \/>\nJordan Bennett\u2019s \u201cSkateboards,\u201d Kent Monkman\u2019s video art \u201cDance to Miss Chief\u201d \u00a0a\u00a0remix of contemporary and vintage footage \u00a0in which \u00a0a sexy fantasy &#8220;Miss Chief\u2019&#8221; meets \u00a0Winnetou, a fictitious \u201cIndian\u201d from Karl May\u2019s German Westerns., or Dylan Miner\u2019s excellent installation of decorated bicycles, \u201cNative Kids Ride Bikes,\u201d all refer to the hybrid, rich visual culture which<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_813\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2355.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[796]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-813\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-813\" alt=\"Jordan Bennett, Skateboards\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2355-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jordan Bennett, Skateboards<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">provides space to exist and for the revival of the heritage of the First Nations in the context of contemporary North American urban culture.
