The history of the two countries, with their radical changes in the previous century, is very different from the Israeli narrative, and certainly different in terms of art. Even when Israel was marginal vis \u00e0 vis the traditional art centers, it never closed itself off to the outer world as Albania, nor was it unfamiliar to that world, as Kosovo. Pre-state Israel already had a network of art institutions. Looking at art created in Europe, with associations to the shared and its associations to the shared European art after European art a system of art institutions existed in Israel. Looking at the art created in Albania and Kosovo \u2013 a part of Europe and with associations to a common European past, yet with almost no ties to the other parts of the continent \u2013 stimulates thinking about the growth of an art language and what influences it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5772\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/PACCI.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[5768]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5772\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5772\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/PACCI.jpg\" alt=\"Adrian Paci\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adrian Paci<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\nAlbania and its breakaway state Kosovo (independent in 2008), are part of the Balkan region whose wars and changes shocked Europe in the 1990s. In the part of Kosovo that was part of the former Yugoslavia, art flourished including an avant garde which offered an alternative to the style dictated by the ruling Communist Party. In Albania, considered the most isolated country in the world, most of the art was official and in the service of the government. The current exhibition shows works mainly from the past decade made by artists who grew up after the fall of the dictatorships but with the memories, mental and physical structures, remaining in place. The works reflect postmodern and contemporary practices, especially subversive and original concepts, a preference of the artificial over the natural, and a lack of distinction between high and low art. All this is the response to concrete situations in the two countries, an outgrowth of postmodernist art without being anchored in a modern local tradition against which it can define itself.<a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/182.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[5768]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5773\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/182.jpg\" alt=\"182\" width=\"606\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/182.jpg 606w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/182-300x163.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe exhibition is not so audacious as to attempt to provide an overall picture of the art scenes in the two countries, but with 25 participants it does delineate their contemporary art activities (almost ignoring the four Biennales in Tirana, the capital of Albania, between 2001 and 2007). \u00a0Most of the artists live and work in Kosovo and Albania; their works are displayed in modules. Also on view are works by Anri Sala and Adrian Paci, two very well-known artists originating from the region. A reading of their work takes on an additional dimension in the overall context of the exhibition.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5770\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Ludwig_Albania_Kosovo_ROSTA-3.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[5768]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5770\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5770\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Ludwig_Albania_Kosovo_ROSTA-3-1024x864.jpg\" alt=\"Jakup Ferri   Ludwig M\u00fazeum, Budapest 2016\" width=\"640\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Ludwig_Albania_Kosovo_ROSTA-3-1024x864.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Ludwig_Albania_Kosovo_ROSTA-3-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Ludwig_Albania_Kosovo_ROSTA-3.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jakup Ferri<br \/>Ludwig M\u00fazeum, Budapest 2016<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\nIn the opening cluster, \u201cUtopias,\u201d outstanding works are embroideries by Jakup Ferry, who based them on his drawings, also on view.\u00a0 His artworks move between the na\u00efve and the fantastic, with hybrids and human\/animal grafts, colorful apocalypses reminiscent of works by the late Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Bruly Bouabr\u00e9, from the Ivory Coast, who made small fantasy drawings. Bouabr\u00e9 was one of the first African artists who received international recognition in the traditional centers of the art world as far back as the 1990s. The association to his work ties in with the overall feeling evoked by the exhibition of another expansion of the art world, this time to neglected regions in Europe.<br \/>\nDocumentation of a performance by Driton Selmani in which he added the word \u201cUtopia\u201d to road signs on major arteries is charming in its simplicity (and evokes thoughts of how appropriate it would be for Israel).<br \/>\nGentian Shurti created the video work <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em>, 1997 from documentary footage of the chaos in Albania during the economic crisis of that year as broadcast on international media, while the thoughts on the implications of state-run broadcasting systems\u2026). Some of the images were hard to believe that they were real, such as civilians pulling a plane, along with clips from cartoons, which created a fascinating, bitter, and amusing piece.<br \/>\nA newspaper clipping from 1987 mentioning Ardian Isufi as an outstanding member of the Communist Youth under Albania\u2019s dictator Enver Hoja evokes an examination of the past and its brainwashing. Installed next to it was a chilling \u201cear of corn\u201d made of false teeth, making present the distortion of what is human.<br \/>\nTexts are central to the new work by Adrian Paci on view, made following the discovery of mail sacks full of undelivered letters from Italian civilians. They had arrived in Albania during the Italian occupation during World War II and were unable to return home after the war. Paci chose sections of the letters, read by five actors in video clips screened in a semicircle next to each other like an unending circle of sorrow. \u00a0The day-to-day aspect of the letters sent to families, with their practical questions, anecdotes, even jokes alongside of longings and fears, written without any idea of what was happening in Italy, is unnerving.<br \/>\nThe cluster of \u201cRereading the city\u201d examines the repressive urban tradition left behind by the dictatorship. Endri Dani\u2019s work, <em>182 cm<\/em>.\u00a0 shows photographs of himself at the entrances to buildings in cities throughout Albania with his exact height. The work has associations to the video <em>Alice in Wonderland,<\/em> a land of horrors in which a building can have ceilings and entrances lower than the height of its residents.<br \/>\nThis section includes four videos devoted to the project of painting building fa\u00e7ades, initiated by the painter Edi Rama, when he was mayor of Tirana (he is currently head of the government of Albania) publicized mainly by the videos made by his friend the artist Anri Sala. What seemed like a heroic-utopian-spirited project is criticized sharply as a perverted continuation of the policy of illusion-making.<br \/>\nThe exhibition \u201cfinale\u201d is the section \u201cUnwritten Stories,\u201d referring to new social orders, including the nature of Islam and the code of family honor customary in Kosovo and Albania, although the last few decades have seen a decrease. Some of the works bring to mind narrative works such as by Sophie Calle. What is surprising is a work titled \u201cJapan,\u201d in which a bloodstained sheet wafts in the wind to the sounds of Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cHallelujah.\u201d In certain regions of Kosovo, the bridal bedsheet is still brought out to prove the bride\u2019s virginity. The title \u201cJapan\u201d not only refers visually to the flag of Japan but to Japan as Baudrillard\u2019s brilliant postmodern example.<br \/>\nThe exhibition successfully conveys the feeling that change is apace both in Kosovo and in Albania as well as in the changing art circles.
