Sylvie, an actress and opera singer, and Gilbert, a jurist and member of the communist party, came from Tunis to visit the tombs of Jewish saints in hope that after five years of marriage, they would finally have a child. At Elijah&#8217;s Cave on Mount Carmel they met an elderly rabbi who offered to accompany them on their trip to Mount Meron and Tiberias. As they parted, after visiting the holy tombs, the rabbi, Chacham Simchon Hillel, told them that the following year Sylvie would give birth to a son, whose name would be Eliahou. He\u00a0 ponders attempts to reconcile East and West, secular and religious, tradition and modernity. The utopian motto of Jewish unity, &#8220;Kol Yisrael haverim&#8221; is revealed as fragile, if not as an empty vessel.<br \/>\n&#8220;Eliahou,&#8221; Bokobza&#8217;s alter ego, is not only a recurrent figure in the works, but also an active &#8220;speaker.&#8221; As such, he reflects Bokobza&#8217;s observations as a secular Israeli Jew of Tunisian origin. Yet the questions raised do not, of course, relate only to Bokobza himself. In this installation, Bokobza distills various components of identity and national and personal layers of meaning: The table is surrounded by chairs in British colonial style that belonged to Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Taieb, the artist&#8217;s maternal grandmother. The porcelain plates and ceremonial objects on it belonged to Elise Bokobza, the artist&#8217;s paternal grandmother.<br \/>\nThese Western objects tell a story of, appropriation, and cultural fusion characteristic of Tunis (as well as of Egypt and other areas around the Mediterranean basin during the first half of the twentieth century).<br \/>\nThe table in Famiglia, the very core of the exhibition, represents an earlier and no less fateful and meaningful turning point: the dramatic transition of Judaism from a religion whose practice centered on sacrifices to one centered on prayer, based on the decree of Yohanan ben Zakkai and the sages of Yavneh following the destruction of the Second Temple; from a religion whose existence was bound to the temple site to a religion whose existence revolves around time \u2013 the time of prayer and the time of the holidays. As the Talmud states, &#8220;When the Temple was in existence, the altar atoned for man, and now that it no longer exists, man&#8217;s table atones for him&#8221; (Tractate Minchot, 97A). Those &#8220;seated&#8221; at the table are represented by portraits stamped onto the plates (a fusion\u00a0 of personas and ceremonial dishes). These figures\u00a0 originate from the\u00a0 full geographical and chronological Jewish spectrum \u2013 from the Jews of Spain prior to their expulsion to twentieth-century American Jewry; a human community whose members are bound by religion and\u00a0 tradition yet separated by time and space, and often also by their worldviews.<br \/>\nBokobza is not a dewy-eyed optimist, and does not paint a semblance of unity. The exhibition&#8217;s name is imbued with explicit irony, as well as what may be interpreted as reserved hope for change and for the gradual erosion of stereotypical patterns. The title UNITED COLORS OF JUDAICA may be taken to bespeak a utopian yearning, as well as a satirical comment. It echoes the modern utopia of the United Nations, the organization founded in the aftermath of the Second World War in order to ensure world peace, as well as the postmodern marketing parody advertised by the Italian fashion label Benetton, which has been using the marketing slogan &#8220;United Colors of Benetton&#8221; since the early 1990s. The creation of a framework in which a thing and its parody appear together, or become one, is characteristic of the exhibition.<br \/>\nThe installation Famiglia is a stylistic hybrid based on the combination of objects from different sources. Hybridity is also characteristic of the figures and sites in the holiday series, such as the grandfather lighting the Hanukkah candles while dressed in the white-and-red attire of Santa Claus, or the description of Tu Bishvat that includes a blooming cherry tree rather than an almond tree. Hybridity, according to the cultural critic Homi K. Bhabha, is a product of colonialism.\u00a0 In a Jewish context, such hybridity is evident in communities that experienced colonial influences in their countries of origin \u2013 such as the Jewish communities of North Africa, which were influenced by French culture while entertaining a constant dialogue with their Muslim environment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4708\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/united-ex-6.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[4696]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4708\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4708\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/united-ex-6-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Exhibiton space\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/united-ex-6-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/united-ex-6-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/united-ex-6.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4708\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exhibiton space<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A connection between East and West and a conflation of identities is one of the most prominent characteristics of the fictive family in Bokobza&#8217;s Famiglia: a family composed of invented and historical figures, bringing together men and women, eastern and western individuals, religious and secular figures, Jews and non-Jews.<br \/>\nTwo of these family members are pivotal historical figures: Spinoza and Al Jolson, two Jews whose families migrated from one country to another and whothemselves created, albeit in very different ways, new encounters between Jewish identity and a different culture.<br \/>\nThe philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632\u20131677) was born into a Sephardic family that had been forced to convert to Christianity and returned to Judaism in Amsterdam. In recent decades, Spinoza has been perceived as a secular Jew \u2013 although this term was not yet in use in his time. His excommunication by the Jewish community and the unanimous boycotting of his writings by Jews, Catholics, and Protestants,have come to represent fear of free thinking.<br \/>\nJolson, who was born in Lithuania as Asa Yoelson, immigrated to the United States. During the 1920s, he became a first-class American star, garnering fame for his role in &#8220;The Jazz Singer&#8221; (1927), the first sound film. In the film, Jolson also appeared in blackface\u00a0 (as he did in many of his performances) \u2013 adopting the identity of those who suffered discrimination even more severe than the Jews.<a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Bokovza-Bar-Mitzvah-2015.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[4696]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-4709\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Bokovza-Bar-Mitzvah-2015-803x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Bokovza , Bar Mitzvah , 2015\" width=\"640\" height=\"816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Bokovza-Bar-Mitzvah-2015-803x1024.jpg 803w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Bokovza-Bar-Mitzvah-2015-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Bokovza-Bar-Mitzvah-2015.jpg 1606w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe themes of shifting and changing identities and of masquerading reoccur throughout the exhibition, and are related to the ambivalence and capacities to survive and adjust characteristic of immigrant societies.<br \/>\nBokobza&#8217;s exploration of identity politics in UNITED COLORS OF JUDAICA\u00a0 continues his ongoing\u00a0 observation of the\u00a0 subject, as was initially expressed in Plaisir Oriental, his first solo exhibition in 2000, and has been present in all of his subsequent exhibitions.<br \/>\nBokobza addresses universal issues of identity, yet his point of departure is autobiographical, and his primary concern is with Mizrachi identity (that of Jews from Arabic speaking countries). Issues of discrimination surfaced in Israeli society since the pre-state period, as manifested in the shameful episode known as &#8220;The Kinneret Yemenite Affair,&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and continued after the founding of the state with the riots in Wadi Salib in Haifa during the 1950s, and\u00a0 up to the uproar concerning Yair Gabuz&#8217;s statement about &#8220;talisman kissers&#8221; at a left-wing rally prior to the 2015 elections.<br \/>\nIn\u00a0\u00a0 early Israeli visual art, images of Mizrachi Jews were mostly created\u00a0 by European-born artists (Rubin, Gutman, Litvinovsky, and many other Eretz Israel artists ). Since the turn of the twenty-first century artists of eastern origin, Bokobza among them, are revisiting and changing conventions of the Mizrachi image. He creates beautiful, colorful works that are often\u00a0 considered na\u00efve and\u00a0 decorative, while raising profound questions and expressing opinions that are far from consensual. Plaisir Oriental, for instance, included the painting Halutz (Pioneer), in which a man is positioned in a manner reminiscent of a medieval pillory.\u00a0 In Flag, a hole replaces the Star of David at the center of the national flag, revealing a hand carrying a flag lined with eyes (which may be read as directed against the evil eye, as a form of surveillance, or as accusatory eyes).<br \/>\nTwo years later, in the exhibition Tzayar-Tayar (Painter-Tourist), Bokobza&#8217;s engagement with the complex East-West relations became even clearer in the work Come to Palestine,\u00a0 which\u00a0 quotes\u00a0 and subverts Ze&#8217;ev Raban&#8217;s familiar poster Come and See Erez Israel (1929): whereas the original poster featured a colonialist figure in a cork hat pointing at Palestine from the sea, Bokobza&#8217;s painting transforms a Mizrachi man into a ridiculous parody of the elegant colonialist figure, and has him pointing in the opposite direction, from east to west. In another work in the same exhibition, Bokobza portrayed himself as a child riding a donkey in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris \u2013 a typical French bourgeois scene that, in Bokobza&#8217;s painting, calls to mind biblical images of the land of Israel or Zionist images of children.<br \/>\nBokobza&#8217;s 2006 exhibition Bezalel \u2013 Version B presented research about\u00a0 and a homage to Haviv Sasson, Haim Mahbob, Rahamim Ezra, Yehuda Nachmias, Yaakov Mizrahi and David Seri \u2013 Mizrachi artists who studied at the Bezalel Art School (founded and directed by Boris Schatz) before it closed down in 1928. Bokobza examined what might be described as the spiral relations between East and West: Bezalel, with Schatz at its head, sought to become a European academy, and cast an Orientalizing gaze at the East while being an\u00a0 actual part of it. It endorsed stylistic trends and fashions influenced in different ways by the East, such as art nouveau and Orientalist painting, perceiving the East through Western eyes and classifying Mizrachi artists as mere artisans. As the trial of history reveals, these artist remain absent from collective Israeli artistic memory. In UNITED COLORS OF JUDAICA, this game is evident in several works, including the portrait of Al Jolson in blackface and the painting Purim, in which a fair-skinned figure wears the mask of a Yemenite Jew. An early preoccupation with politics of identity and its ambivalent reading can be found in the work Patriarch 1 (from the exhibition Tzayar-Tayar, 2002), which portrays a figure that may be identified as a sheikh, a rabbi, or a westerner disguised as a Mizrachi man. In the exhibition This Place, at the Bar-David Museum on Kibbutz Baram, 2012, the identity adopted by the hegemonic Jewish group is Arab identity \u2013 an act related to the problematic history of the land belonging to the kibbutz, which was partially built on the land of the Arab village Biram.
