The recent conference at Tel Yitzhak was attended by educators and others engaged in formulating new patterns of memory, from Prof. Michal Govrin, who led a research group at the Van Leer Institute, through Zikaron Basalon, a group which originated from one individual\u2019s search for a new mode of memory.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3713\" style=\"width: 283px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/images.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[3712]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3713\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3713\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/images.jpg\" alt=\"Omer Fast video still &quot;Spielberg&#96;s list&quot;, 2003\" width=\"273\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Omer Fast video still &#8220;Spielberg`s list&#8221;, 2003<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Over recent decades, witnesses central to memory formation, at meetings or as \u201cliving witnesses\u201d escorting educational groups to Poland. The survivor generation is dwindling, leading to a new situation in which the transmission of memory will have to be accomplished without firsthand witnesses. Questions about the way we understand and represent the world, multiple realities and how to read them, are engaging the world of art by its very nature. Testimony and its context has engaged artists directly, such as Roy Menachem Markovitch, who directed and filmed his silenced grandmother narrating her story, showing the inability to bridge past and present.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3715\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/New-Picture-2.bmp\" rel=\"lightbox[3712]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3715\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3715\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/New-Picture-2.bmp\" alt=\"Shai Saul , Departure (detail)\" width=\"326\" height=\"444\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shai Saul , Departure (detail)<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Another angle of exploration is through what can be cautiously called \u201creenactments.\u201d Shai Saul reenacted his grandfather\u2019s farewell gaze at his Berlin home by filming him in the apartment house that remained standing during the war. Omer Fast\u2019s video, Spielberg\u2019s List (2003) depicted the chilling relationship between the real Plasz\u00f3w concentration camp and its recreation for the film Schindler\u2019s List (1993).<br \/>\nIn my lecture at the Massuah Instistute\u2019s annual awards ceremony for outstanding Israeli art on the Holocaust, I take a closer look at Michael Kovner\u2019s Ezekiel\u2019s World, which belongs to what may be called a tradition that began with Art Spiegelman\u2019s breakthrough \u201ccomics\u201d Maus, a graphic novel on the Holocaust published in book form in 1991. Among those continuing this trend in Israel are Michel Kichka, with his \u201cSecond Generation: Things I never told my father\u201d and Rutu Modan\u2019s \u201cThe Property,\u201d both published in 2013. Kovner\u2019s graphic novel differs in its clear painterly style (rather than comics style),<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3717\" style=\"width: 737px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ezekiels-full-92-93.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[3712]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3717\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3717\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ezekiels-full-92-93.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Kovner Ezekiel\u2019s world\" width=\"727\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ezekiels-full-92-93.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ezekiels-full-92-93-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ezekiels-full-92-93-1024x623.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Kovner Ezekiel\u2019s world<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">continuing his long career in figurative painting, and the text being less important in moving the action forward.
