During the last two decades of his life, Rembrandt, a virtuoso artist extremely knowledgeable in the history of art, observed his surroundings and the human condition, turning a sober yet merciful gaze, full of acceptance, as only a person with vast life experience and awareness of mortality is capable of. His complete mastery of the painterly medium enabled him to experiment and move freely between celebrating materiality and engaging in fleeting refractions of light and dust particles. What takes place within the paintings is no less than a tempest, with the viewer\u2019s gaze making the transitions between scrutinizing and distancing, between the overall picture and its details.<br \/>\nThe works assembled for this exhibition turn it into a one-time experience. It is composed of works belonging to the National Gallery and the Rijksmuseum (the exhibition organizers) along with works from museums and collections from Scotland, Australia, the USA, Switzerland, Germany France, Sweden, England and Holland. Along with drawings and etchings, 40 paintings are on exhibit. The most familiar works (it\u2019s impossible to use the word \u201coutstanding\u201d because they all stand out) are The Jewish Bride (1665), three self-portraits, including Portrait at age 63 (1669, the year of his death), Joseph and Potiphar\u2019s Wife (1655) and Bathsheba Reading David\u2019s Letter (1654). Viewing them as an ensemble illuminates the fearless manner in which Rembrandt looked directly at his own decline, changing his attittude from irony to love.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The works are arranged thematically instead of chronologically. Viewers are directed in an orderly, structured route through seven spaces, beginning with \u201cSelf-scrutiny,\u201d in viewers are confronted with his late self-portraits, ending with \u201cInner Conflict\u201d and \u201cReconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Rembrandt\u2019s late style is characterized primarily by broad, unrestrained brushstrokes, color over color and apparently wet on wet. His style began to change after The Night Watch, his monumental work completed in 1642. During that period, his popularity declined, and his students, such as Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Bol, overshadowed their teacher. Rembrandt experienced exhilarating times of great success and recognition as a great artist, but also experienced deep personal loss &#8211; the death of his three children and beloved wife Saskia the same year he completed The Night Watch.<br \/>\nRembrandt\u2019s gaze at human loneliness in his late works seems to reflect the second wave of tragedies that read like the Book of Job: bankruptcy, followed by the rejection of The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis (1661-62) \u2013 a huge canvas commissioned for the Amsterdam city hall and then rejected by the city council, diminishing of his reputation as an artist, the death of his beloved Hendrickje and last remaining son, Titus, in 1668.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2552\" style=\"width: 232px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rembrandt-TFY-X7959.pr_.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[2541]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2552\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2552\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rembrandt-TFY-X7959.pr_-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"Titus at his Desk Rembrandt 1655 Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam\u00a9 Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. Loan Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Foundation \/ Photo: Studio Tromp, Rotterdam<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A surviving section of the large Conspiracy is part of the exhibition.<br \/>\nDespite these circumstances, Rembrandt created an impressive body of work during his later years, and continued to receive commissions from patrons outside of Holland (yet misunderstandings and quarrels resulted in most of the commissions failing to improve his desperate financial situation).<br \/>\nRembrandt\u2019s late self-portraits form an arena of self-confrontation. Out of the approximately 80 self-portraits that Rembrandt made during his lifetime (paintings and etchings), the early ones were sometimes playful or exercises in virtuosity, while the later ones feature uncompromising observation, difficult to contain . Old age is not depicted as beautiful or respectful. In his Self-Portrait with Two Circles (1665-1669), he presents himself holding his palette, emphasizing his professional identity. This is an unforgettable painting demonstrating how concepts such as \u201crelevance\u201d used in an art context are meaningless. This is a portrait relevant to nothing and everything.<br \/>\nArt, symbolized by the palette, fails to protect the artist from the ravages of time, and is not a lie telling the truth. Art is a necessity. On either side of Rembrandt\u2019s head is a circle marked out on the grey wall. They might be outlines for tondos (paintings in a round frame), halos for huge saints which were not completed, or, as suggested by various interpretations, circles referring to the ultimate test of the artist as formulated by Giotto during the Early Renaissance: the challenge of drawing a perfect circle freehand.<br \/>\nBoth of the artist\u2019s hands, one on his hip and the other holding the palette, seem to melt into the paint, into the space, the hand holding the palette blending in with it. The red of his shirt looks challenging, and when standing in front of the painting, it took my breath away. It was a bold red, protecting Rembrandt\u2019s heart like the high priest\u2019s breastplate. The palette is almost transparent, as if the power of art drained out of it into its creator. His lips are tight in contrast to the all-embracing eyes. The large hands are clasped, as if their work is done.<br \/>\nThe exhibition is a song of praise to the encounter of Rembrandt\u2019s human sensitivities with his artistic abilities. In The Jewish Bride (portrait of a couple as Isaac and Rebecca), Rebecca\u2019s dress is made of bright red, different from the challenging red of the Self-Portrait with Two Circles dated the same year.
