Entering Erwin Wurm\u2019s solo exhibition \u201cAway at Home\u201d one feels disruption and disorientation. Besides an exhibition text, the main means of understanding the space and the works is through watching the people interacting in the space, people who are not embarrassed to experiment with Wurm\u2019s sculptures. Only afterwards does one notice the artist\u2019s directions and little illustrations on each of the platforms. Visitors are invited to use the objects such as clothing, pails, furniture and architectural elements, to remain for one minute in a certain pose with or inside of the object, as the artist instructed. The furniture Wurm chose are from the 1960s and \u201870s, acquired at the Jaffa Flea market. They are modern pieces reflecting the moment at which Modernism stopped being an ideal and became a style. It is possible to pick them up, lie down on or under them, insert one\u2019s limbs or turn them into a prosthetic continuing the body. Thus the exhibition becomes a space of play with aspects of intimacy and familiarity between visitors.<\/p>\n<h2>Over the past two years the Tel Aviv Museum of Art has been re-formulating or at least expanding its \u201ccontract\u201d with its audience. Wurm\u2019s exhibition should be perceived as a continuation of a long list of exhibitions in which the audience is the motivating force or in an active interaction with the art. Thus it was in some of the works in the Yayoi Kusama retrospective (and definitely the installation <em>A Bouquet of Love I Saw in the Universe (<\/em>2021)<strong>, <\/strong>the forest of sharp points in black and pink made especially for the Tel Aviv exhibition), Urs Fischer\u2019s exhibition \u201cPlay,\u201d which Lapidot also curated, in which office chairs moved through the gallery assisted by IA, and \u201ccommunicated\u201d with visitors. The project\/exhibition curated by Ruti Direktor \u201cImagine Museum (or:\u00a0The Body Remembers)\u201d was an audience collaboration in most of the exhibits (as in the performances by Michal Samama, Batsheva Dance Company, Yasmin Godar and many others).<\/h2>\n<p>Wurm proposes various positions to visitors through the delicate drawings near each piece, and sometimes adds notes referring to mood or suitable associations. For example, at the side of a table into which a person can insert one\u2019s head, he wrote, \u201cIn memory of Holofernes,\u201d the Assyrian general beheaded by Judith in the Book of Judith.<br \/>\nThe contrast between the practical tone and modern elegance of the furniture and the absolutely impractical use he makes of them creates a dissonance which is amusing but also ridiculous and mean. There are strong associations to a medieval torture chamber as well as modern prisons such as Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib. The sculptures\u2019 playfulness conceals a dark core.<br \/>\nA similar feeling arises from the two new works: a rounded wall and a wall that looks like a part of a chest, both with holes in them. Visitors are invited to insert a hand, leg or head in a way that once again is reminiscent of torture machinery. The main association is to Robert Gober\u2019s works such as <em>Leg (Untitled)<\/em> (1990), works in which the normal and familiar become threatening, as in the logic of a nightmare. The \u201cuncanny,\u201d the concept coined by Freud, arises again and again when observing Wurm\u2019s artworks, evoking Surrealism, especially in works by Hans Bellmer (Germany), as well as Dora Maar (France), and Man Ray (USA). (As for Israeli art, it brings to mind Gilad Ratman\u2019s videos from 2010 in which heads emerge from a wall).<br \/>\n\u201cNarrow House\u201d (2010) is one of Wurm\u2019s most brilliant works. A replica of his parents\u2019 house, a typical suburban Austrian house, preserves its length and height but its width is compressed into 1.1.m. The result is funny and embarrassing, like walking past a fun house mirror. The house turns into itself and becomes distressing, while the association of narrow to narrowminded becomes more acute.<br \/>\nI first saw the \u201cNarrow House\u201d in Venice in 2011 in the garden of the Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti. The installation here, in the narrow courtyard between the Tel Aviv Museum\u2019s Postmodern wing and Modern wing, is striking and the message became even stronger. The house, which seems to have been taken directly from a children\u2019s fairytale, is as multilayered and complex as the stories.
