Why does an exhibition whose images lean heavily on very familiar precedents succeed in leaving an impression lingering with visitors after leaving the gallery?<br \/>\nThe main piece is a chorus of clay figures in rows, painted in bold oil colors, installed at the end of the ground floor exhibition hall. The entire hall became a \u201cwhite cube\u201d \u2013 an image and concept which is perhaps the greatest clich\u00e9 in contemporary art (or more precisely, modern art). Too bad three paintings of heads (portraits?) were hung here as well. The colorful, weak paintings seem to be there as a gallerist\u2019s second thoughts, thinking that there should be something something that clients could imagine on their own living room wall.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16171\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16171\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16171\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3ad2ed16-9c21-4bee-a951-cd702864c549.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3ad2ed16-9c21-4bee-a951-cd702864c549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3ad2ed16-9c21-4bee-a951-cd702864c549-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel Silver: Chorus and the Walking Tables 2022<br \/>(detail)<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Silver\u2019s handling of clay brings to mind works by artists such as \u00a0Medardo Rosso, Degas, through Tony Cragg and Kiki Smith, deep in the mainstream. On the second floor, in a space of glistening white no less glaring than the ground floor, colorful clay pieces are installed on white table surfaces. The tables\u2019 legs are large and black , like soldiers or storm troopers\u2019 boots, made \u00a0in the same manner of textured clay vibrating with the imprints of fingers. My immediate association was to the expression \u201cfeet of clay,\u201d a concept existing in English and many European languages, taken from the Book of Daniel, Chapter 2 (the artist\u2019s namesake). Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, had a dream in which he saw a statue of precious metals with feet of clay. Daniel prophesized that this meant that the Babylonian Empire, despite its glory, would fall, since its foundations were unstable.<br \/>\nThe small sculptures on the boards\/tables, objects torn in pain, evoke the memory of major works from art history, as does the \u201cChorus\u201d on the lower level. In this way, the process moves on an axis between quotation to imitation to kitsch. A specific work that comes to mind is Bacon\u2019s iconic work of 1944, \u201cThree Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion,\u201d but there are many other works that could be named by Dali, Mir\u00f3, Picasso, Andr\u00e9 Masson and others.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16172\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16172\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16172\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/830a7968-c368-4b6a-95a9-609e5d68b0a7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/830a7968-c368-4b6a-95a9-609e5d68b0a7.jpg 768w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/830a7968-c368-4b6a-95a9-609e5d68b0a7-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel Silver: Chorus and the Walking Tables 2022<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">But , what could have easily come together as a collection of mentions has crystalized to a whole, a disturbing hybrid of bodies and objects. The expressive, mute chorus and caravan of tables with their heavy feet planted in the white void is bursting with vitality like a golem able to come to life with a divine spark or mechanical means (another association to clay figures). The feeling is of animation waiting to wake up, a parade of difficulty, a beggars\u2019 dance in which crudity and charm blend into something enchanting and frightening.
