The Silver Lion Award for a promising young artist was given to Lebanese-British artist Ali Cherri, exhibiting large mud sculptures in the international exhibition \u201cThe Milk of Dreams.\u201d The French pavilion where Zineb Sedira is exhibiting \u2013 the first artist of Algerian heritage to represent France received an Honorable Mention, along with Uganda\u2019s new pavilion.<\/p>\n<p>This Biennale is so political, its list of prizes reflects an attempt at affirmative action by recognizing art that was marginalized in the past, the congruence between the spirit of the national pavilions whose curatorship was accomplished by the countries participating in the international exhibition curated by Cecilia Alemani, an Italian-American\u00a0 curator, is quite evident. The <em>Zeitgeist<\/em> \u2013 spirit of the times \u2013 makes its statement.<\/p>\n<p>Despite sympathy with the ideas, Sonia Boyce\u2019s installations in the British pavilion and Zineb Sedira\u2019s in the French pavilion are disappointing. These are two interesting artists, and Sidera is excellent, but the Biennale exhibitions, supposedly the highlight of their careers, are not presenting their best work. Boyce, who for years has been creating projects integrating musical, visual, and social aspects has focused in recent years on Black bands and women singers some of whom have been forgotten or have not at all received the recognition they deserved.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15418\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15418\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15418\" src=\"http:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_9215-e1651393731150-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_9215-e1651393731150-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/old.smadarsheffi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_9215-e1651393731150-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">S\u00e1mi pavilion<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the pavilion, she created polyphony in a kind of jam session, through video works in which five women singers each sing separately, creating a single sound track. The spaces are designed in an extreme 1960s\/\u201970s style, as gilded objects become record stands or seats. The problem is that the sensation of set scenery as if visitors are entering the set of a musical, is so strong as to dilute Boyce\u2019s statement into nostalgia wrapped up on glittering design. In the French pavilion, which was very popular on opening day, Sidera uses the concept of creating period rooms \u2013 beginning with 1950s residential\/rooms from a home in 1950s Algiers, 1960s Paris, and England \u2013 where she lives \u2013 in the 1980s One of the spaces is a Parisian bar where a couple is dancing. These spaces lead into a recreated movie theatre of the 1950s screening a film Sidera made about her family, influenced greatly by Pontecorvo\u2019s film <em>The Battle of Algiers<\/em> (1966), only four years after Algerian liberation forces\u2019 victory over the French. Sidera colorized the black and white film and inserted her own figure into a war that took place before she was born, creating a fascinating story about immigration whose anti-colonialist stance touches exposed nerves. Had the film been screened on its own without the scenery, the pavilion would have been much stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Refinement and power characterize Simone Leigh\u2019s direct, impressive work at the American pavilion. Leigh covered the entire building with thatching in an ironic, bitter, and painful reference to the memory of the international fairs of the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century through the 1930s in which European countries exhibited their colonies in a twisted manner, with \u201chuman zoos.\u201d At the center is a huge sculpture with a rounded face and erased features as the millions of victims of colonialism in its many manifestations were faceless. The sculpture leans on the tradition of the nimba, an object placed on the heads of participants in rituals in Guinea. Picasso owned similar statuettes (several of these, from the Weiss Collection, exhibited about two years ago in the Israel Museum. Leigh points to the history of the Biennale, begun in parallel to the large international fairs, and similar to this in spirit, including its very narrow description of what and who belongs to \u201cthe world of culture.\u201d Her bronze and ceramic sculptures of women and objects, installed in the pavilion in such a way as to emphasize their monumentality and internal \u201cspine,\u201d resonate on the giant sculpture installed at the entrance to the international exhibition at the Arsenale, which was installed on the High Line in NYC, then curated as well by Alemani.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to note some similarity between Maria Eichhorn\u2019s work in the German pavilion and Ignasi Aball\u00ed in the Spanish pavilion. Eichhorn engages in the dark history of the building built according to explicit instructions from Hitler, and exposes the foundations of the original Bavarian pavilion from 1909 on which the German pavilion was constructed. In the Spanish pavilion, the discussion was about the angle at which it was placed in relation to surrounding buildings. In both pavilions, the space itself became the work, the story and the drama. Eichhorn\u2019s pavilion connects to Hans Hacke\u2019s design in 1993 but is much weaker. Hacke also discussed the history of the pavilion but did succeed in doing so concisely, with a broken floor and a huge sign \u2013 \u201cGermania\u201d \u2013 the ancient Teutonic name for Germany, expressing the violence embodied in the building and commemorated in the structure.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli pavilion, \u201cQueendom,\u201d is anemic and pretentious but mainly distressing. Ilit Azoulay\u2019s career over the past decade has been characterized by sharp ups and downs: <em>Regarding Silences <\/em>(2019) shown at the CCA, Tel Aviv, was excellent, but her latest at Braverman was very disappointing.\u00a0 <em>Queendom, <\/em>(curated by Shelley Harten), attempts to respond to each item on the imaginary list of issues on the current cultural discourse, yet remains distanced from the creation of any experience. \u201cWomen\u2019s empowerment,\u201d \u201cnational and patriarchal bias that becomes a cross-border regendered space,\u201d and the change \u201cof the architectural orientation of the pavilion from west to east,\u201d all appear in the exhibition text.<\/p>\n<p>The intentions mentioned in the text shatter when confronted with large photomontages with beige\/grey coloration. At their best, the works bring to mind an encounter between Nevet Yitzhak and works by Lihi Turjeman referring to archaeology. The images are based on photographs from the archive of Austrian-Jewish-British archaeologist and art historian David Storm Rice (1913-1962), whose papers were purchased by the L.A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art, Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>The use of a lovely blue on the pavilion\u2019s ceiling and blue covering of the two pillars which were topped with kind of capitals or rims does not transform the pavilion into a \u201cqueen\u2019s palace,\u201d as the press release stated, and certainly not to Mizrahi \u2013 suffice it to remember the marvelous blue in Giotto\u2019s Arena Chapel in Padua, only a short trip from Venice.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s successful pavilion features Marco Fusinato\u2019s <em>Desastres, <\/em>a sound and video installation. It shows images of chaos along with music produced on site from an electronic system looking like a wall. The large pavilion has only a single work, but it is shocking and needs no additions. In the Belgian pavilion, Francis Alys presents his series of films of children\u2019s games in war zones and areas of conflict across the world, along with small very lovely paintings of the same sites. The cloudy quality that softens the pictures of reality seems to emphasize the illusory nature of external appearance which may hide various scenarios of violence.<\/p>\n<p>Violence takes on a beautiful, abstract appearance in Malta\u2019s pavilion in which drops of melted metal drip into minimalist black basins that make up the formal composition of Caravaggio\u2019s <em>Beheading of St. John the Baptist<\/em> (1608). Other good pavilions are those of Finland, Hungary, and Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>The Nordic pavilion in the Giardini hosts the S\u00e1mi pavilion for the first time. The S\u00e1mi are a nomadic people living in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russian, suffering from discrimination and colonialism in their various diasporas for centuries (similar to the persecution of Aborigines in Australia. Like the Aborigines, they are an indigenous people disinherited from much of their land). During the opening days, the artists and curators stood out in their national dress as a kind of representation reminding people of a repressed legacy. The works on view are very large paintings by Anders Sunna depicting landscapes of villages and nature; a problematic sculpture made of reindeer corpses by M\u00e1ret \u00c1nne Sara, perhaps the most well-known S\u00e1mi artist, as she exhibited in the last Documenta; and documentary videos films by Pauliina Feodoroff. The pavilion as a celebration of nationality is stronger than the art, a reminder that the movement of the increase of movements of strengthening the nation-state began before the current war in Ukraine. Hosting the S\u00e1mi nation in the Nordic pavilion is recognition of the legitimacy of their struggle for their own state, or at least autonomy. From the aspect, despite being described as \u201chosting,\u201d it is a direct contrast to the step that Germany and France took in 2013 when they exchanged their exhibition spaces as a declaration of friendship and a call for blurring national borders within Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian pavilion consists of a single wall on which Pavlo Makov\u2019s <em>Acqua Alta: The Fountain of Exhaustion <\/em>(1995) is installed -a triangle of funnels, each one split into two, through which water flows. The piece speaks of over-exploitation of natural resources and the exploitation by aggressive countries against weaker ones (such as diverting rivers and other water sources). In the current context, the work alludes also to the Russian attempt to dominate Ukrainian culture. Empathy for the curators who traveled under fire to bring the works to the Biennale added an aura to the pavilion but this was not suffice for it to be awarded a prize. However, the catalog ran out during the first few days post opening, with numerous visitors, and the city is full of Ukrainian flags and events showing identification with Ukraine.
