Revealed in eight photographs are treetops, sections of a seascape, light sparkling on the deck of a boat, and fog. The musicians must be present onstage, but for four minutes and thirty-three seconds they do not play a single note. The silence slowly fills with the rustling of the audience in the concert hall and with sounds from beyond its walls. Sounds usually perceived as \u201cbackground noise\u201d take over the empty space and receive painfully pointed attention. The blacks, whites, and grays of Rotner\u2019s photographs, which demand close observation, create space for the inner sound, for what is swallowed up and overtaken in the bustle of the mundane. This is the foundation of Rotner\u2019s link to Bialik\u2019s oeuvre. Bialik was the one who coined the Hebrew word for camera: <em>matzlemah.<\/em> The word is a conglomerate of several meaningful associations <em>&#8211; tzelem<\/em> (image), <em>tzel<\/em> (shadow) and <em>mah<\/em> (what?) are concealed in the word <em>matzlemah<\/em>. The word <em>tzelem<\/em> appears in Genesis in the text stating that the human was created in God\u2019s image. In the visual arts, the shadow is closely connected to Pliny, the Roman philosopher who attributed the invention of painting to a young woman who traced the contour of the shadow cast on the wall by her beloved before he went to war, to preserve his memory. Although the blacks and grays in Rotner\u2019s photographs are from the depictions of concrete objects existing in the world, their magic lies in the depth of the concealed layers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>Eight artworks constitute Yana Rotner\u2019s series \u201cSea of Silence.\u201d Each one is slightly larger than a postcard, a means of communication that has almost entirely disappeared over recent decades, now cloaked with an aura of nostalgia. The photographs, taken on a trip to Greece, represent a continuous process of external observation of the environment to the extent of almost merging with nature enveloped in night. The images are from frames isolated from a 16mm film. Unlike stills, in which the split second of each frame at the moment of taking the photograph is invisible to the naked eye, the images in <em>Sea of Silence<\/em> were selected through repeated, clear-eyed looking at the filmstrip and the frames before and after the chosen image.
