Traces VII \u2013 Action Line <\/strong>curated by Hadas Maor, reprises the attitude that characterized the 2013 Biennale for Drawing curated by Tal Yahas. Applying a very broad reading of the term \u201cdrawing,\u201d similar to the fifth Biennale, the current Biennale of Drawing emphasizes line as action in three-dimensional space. However, expanding the concept leaves it without an essential core as one more large group show like other biennales\/exhibitions\/festivals held in Jerusalem over the past two months \u2013 the Jerusalem Biennale and the Manofim Contemporary Art Festival, Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The exhibition in the <strong>Jerusalem Artists\u2019 House<\/strong> is beautifully installed, most of the works are good, and yet it does not go beyond to become an arena for a change of viewpoint or a new experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Among the more interesting works is <em>Cement<\/em> by Avner Pinchover, an artist whose video <em>Chairs <\/em>stood out in the Midrasha MA exhibition in the summer of 2018. The video depicts Pinchover hurling chairs against a plaster partition or wall, punching holes in the surface. Some perceived it as an outburst of uncontrollable rage. In <em>Cement, <\/em>he threw cement on a wall (without an audience) resulting in a troubling yet lovely image conducting a dialogue with the Artists\u2019 House harmonious building. The gradual crumbling of the work during the months of the exhibition makes it even more complex.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Pinchover\u2019s video showing the shattering of a glass wall by stones takes up the entire entry wall to the upper storey leading to the main hall of the exhibition. The exposed statement, with its chain of associations from Kristallnacht through the stone-throwing in the occupied territories by all sides flattens the work to create a volume of reading that does not contribute to the entire floor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Puzzle,<\/em> a system of small wooden walls moving on metal rails, enables viewers to define a space, enclose and isolate oneself. Despite a certain feeling that this is almost a didactic illustration of the relationship between the individual and society, the work does create encounters with among viewers. The materiality of this work with its limited, almost monochromatic coloring of most of the works, can become the starting point for a discussion of continuing trends in Israeli art, almost uninterrupted over the past few decades. Thoughts on the issue of the current meaning of the works arises time and again, not necessarily because Maor also incorporated works by veteran artists Nachum Tevet and Micha Ullman, who are among those who gave Israeli art its tone. (Ullman\u2019s <em>Sand Table<\/em> is currently on view in Jerusalem in the exhibition \u201cHuman Nature; Shared Sensitivities,\u201d curated by this writer). Works by Michal Helfman, as well, or by Tchelet Ram, exhibited over the past year, seem more conservative and polite than in their former settings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Enola Gay <\/em>by Lihi Nidiz is comprised of electric cables forming a black line drawing in the space with movement and momentum. It carries a certain toxicity and irony due to its name \u2013 the American bomber that dropped the atom bomb (named \u201cLittle Boy\u201d) on Hiroshima.
