current exhibition at the ICA, Boston is one exhibition in the current wave of shows engaged in the theme of immigration in response to the unprecedented 70 million people (as estimated by the UN, which many call conservative) immigrants and refugees in various stages of migration. This is a sensitive issue to which the art world is sympathetic; works on the theme seem to have enjoyed a kind of immunity to pointed criticism. Shonibare\u2019s engagement in colonialism and post-colonialism has, for years, been translated into splendid works, very often troubling, and remaining in one\u2019s memory. Here at the ICA, he made 6,000 books wrapped in \u201cAfrican\u201d print cloth, with golden lettering on their spines spelling out names from the first or second generation of the \u201cGreat Migration\u201d of about 6 million African Americans from the deep South to the American East and West between World War I and the 1970s. Migration of African Americans, now defined more and more as the flight from white terrorism, arose from the institutionalized racism and prejudice that became entrenched in the South until the relative success of the Civil Rights Movement.<\/p>\n<p>At the center of the Library are computer stations at which one can read stories of migration\/flight and add historical and family stories. Patterns of this kind originated in Indonesian batik printing, and were then appropriated by Dutch colonialists who manufactured the textiles in Holland and England, and exported them to their colonies in Africa. This capitalist colonial cycle of exploitation was very typical. In an ironic twist, they became during the 1960s a sign of pride in post-colonial African identity.<\/p>\n<p>One cannot view Shonibare\u2019s work without recalling works addressing libraries associated with Jewish subject matter: Micha Ullman\u2019s <em>Empty Library <\/em>(1995) installed in the Babelplatz in Berlin, site of the Nazis\u2019 book burning (among other locations in Germany), and the memorial to Austrian Jews murdered in the Shoah by Rachel Whiteread (2000) \u2013 an inside-out library in which the spines are concealed making the books anonymous like so many of the murdered; or Edmund de Waal\u2019s \u201cLibrary of Exile\u201d shown in Venice as part of the exhibit \u201cPsalm\u201d coinciding with the 2019 Biennale. Alongside porcelain works exhibited in the synagogue in the ghetto in Venice, de Waal made porcelain libraries holding thousands of books by authors who emigrated or were exiled from their homelands, all in translation instead of original language, exhibited at the Ateneo Veneto. De Waal referenced his grandfather\u2019s plundered, lost library, confiscated in Vienna a short time after the 1938 Anschluss as well as numerous libraries belonging to Jews and on Jewish subjects destroyed in the Second World War, and other lost libraries as signifiers of the decline of culture throughout history.<\/p>\n<p>Shaping African American memory as a library at a time when libraries are changing to become digital data centers for preserving knowledge, continues existing trends of establishing the memory of Blacks as participants in the history of art-making and culture from which they were hitherto excluded. Similar to Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z\u2019s clip at the Louvre, or Kehinde Wiley\u2019s series of paintings depicting African Americans as famous equestrian paintings, here, too, is a place in which to contemplate the appropriation of the culture narrative of the mainstream, while creating a place for Black artists in this framework.
