A three-channel video is projected onto an amphitheatre upholstered in red carpet. Visitors thus become part of a simulated assembly, a forum for sharing ideas and distilling social consensus. The chance nature of the international audience visiting the Biennial resonates the inclusive ideas Mesiti makes present in her work, with its unapologetic and outstanding didactic-utopian character. The irony and ambivalence towards these sites (and the institutions they house) supposedly monuments of justice transform the work into much more complex than seems as first.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On one of the screens, the camera focuses on the Michela, a stenography machine invented in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century used for transcribing the proceedings of the Italian parliament. Mesiti found the machine, designed like a piano, in a flea market in Italy several years ago. She used it to write David Malouf&#8217;s &#8220;Poem to be Written in Another Tongue.&#8221; Malouf is a prominent Australian writer and poet who engages in the possibilities of translation, as another possible option for understanding the piece. Malouf, the son of a Christian Lebanese father and Spanish-Portuguese Jewish mother, writes about the disappearance of the hundreds of languages of Australian aborigines who were subjected to genocide for decades. The text became a musical composition by Max Lyandvert, played by different ensembles throughout the work, such as sung by a choir, a female soloist, or played on huge, illuminated drums.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The camera moves through the corridors of both senate buildings in such a way as to make them seem a single dramatic space, anchored in conservative architectural traditions yet forming the launchpad for surrealist events. The red carpeted circular space with its music and huge images transform the illusionistic arena into a symbolic ritual space that can be read in a context of the roots of democracy in early pagan Greek society. Mesiti has created transitions between sound and movement, between the verbal and non-verbal, and the visual in a powerful whirlpool of harmony and dissonance. The context of ritual, of the primeval, and the dramatic work all make this pavilion into one of the best experiences of the Biennial.
