Photography also took part in this democratization, and interestingly, some of the earliest photographs provide the most reliable testimony of what was demolished in the Third Republic\u2019s momentum for development.\u00a0 In the years in which Renoir\u2019s <em>Les Grands Boulevards<\/em> was painted, he painted outside, and, like Monet, examined the implications of the new understanding of color and vision. Looking back, the large-scale project of renewing Paris is told only from the viewpoint of the bourgeoisie. This was now the city in whose diffuse light the ambivalent figure of the fl\u00e2neur or the boulevardier could be seen, the figure strolling through the city researching urban life. This is the figure about whom Baudelaire wrote in his article \u201cPainter of Modern Times\u201d (source of the exhibition title).
