&#8220;Habitat,&#8221; Sharona Halman builds an environment that combines painting, drawing and sculpture. She endeavors, by means of these three plastic techniques, to examine the interwoven two-dimensional and three-dimensional relationships between shapes and lines, to examine the transitions between them, and to introduce diverse categories of impossible interactions and interconnections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Halman&#8217;s choice of basic elements of straight and rounded lines stems from her aspiration to revamp a newness of life and thought in their being. The various dimensions inherent in her work process are a glorification of freedom constrained by planning. Through their integration, each work examines the developmental potential of the shapes and lines within her medium of operation, encoding the signs that conjoin into the language of the work. For each medium, this action restarts from the beginning, thus preserving the autonomy of the mediums, enabling them to stand on their own without requiring any particular medium to serve or be subject to any other one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It was after her visit, in 2015, to the retrospective exhibition of the American artist Agnes Martin at the Tate Modern Gallery in London that Halman began to create her series of drawings. Martin&#8217;s grid works, based on lines and squares in lightly implied pastel colors, inspired her and motivated her creativity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sculpture in clay and porcelain is the dominant medium in Halman&#8217;s work in recent years and her sculptures complement the body of her painting and drawing work that she created in the past. Sculpture serves her as a &#8220;habitat,&#8221; a home, an environment that enables life. Halman examines the work ensconced inside the material and &#8220;raises&#8221; it out from within. The first work she created in the series &#8220;Habitat&#8221; was a kind of tuber, an elongated, defenseless and vulnerable egg around which the enveloping protective layer began to take shape.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The source of inspiration for Halman&#8217;s sculptures is rooted in her childhood, when she already pondered on the kind of surroundings that would enable living things to grow even when not in their natural environment. Her creative process focuses on devotion to matter and the creation of idiosyncratic codes based on observation of nature and her place in it. In her works, she explores the possibility of freezing the moment when she matches habitat with object and creates a connection that is characterized by harmony. In her outlook, the object derived from the bed obeys the principles of aesthetics and inner harmony, which she consistently pursues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Elements that make up Halman&#8217;s arid white sculpting induce the viewer to touch the exhibits. The scales decorating her porcelain sculptures are reminiscent of a protective layer but something always flashes out from them in bursts \u2013 whether fingers or towers rising high. The images look as if taken from the plant world, sometimes resembling pinecones or corals characterized by an actually erotic sensual aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">From a personal premise, Sharona Halman strenuously endeavors to create something out of thin air. She begins with nothing, from a point that, even if it does contain something, is still very limited, bordering on naught. With meager means she then begins to create, opening with a line, while her gaze constantly examines the development process of her work. The exhibition seeks to identify the line in question that makes up the entire work.
